In 1913, however, Bronislaw Malinowski said of Spencer and Gillen's studies that ‘half the total production in anthropological theory ha[d] been based upon their work, and nine-tenths affected or modified by it’. Native Tribes inspired an intense international debate, orchestrated by J. G. But the debate proved irresolvable in Frazer's terms. Pondering conflicting interpretations of totemism, anthropologists rejected unilinear models of social evolution like Frazer's. And in Australia, analyses of indigenes were distinctively construed. White settlers, concerned to legitimate colonial rule, asked specific questions: did Aborigines have established ties to specific lands? Were Aborigines capable of civilization? I propose that Malinowski was influenced by a Slavic "peasant-love" model of ethnography that shares much with the more current "friendship" model. Though I believe friendship model field-work is unsurpassed, its relationship to peasant-love fieldwork causes me to wonder if it too is motivated by ideologies that will be judged harshly by our intellectual descendants.Closedoi:10.2307/30036866Close Pulman, BertrandMalinowski et la liberté sexuelle des Trobriandais Journal Article In: L’Homme. Malinowski's Kiriwina presents nearly two hundred of Malinowski's previously unpublished photographs of the Islanders among whom he lived between 1915 and 1918. The images are more than embellishments of his ethnography; they are a recreation in striking detail of a distant world. Michael Young, an anthropologist and Malinowski's authorized biographer, has selected the photographs based on one of Malinowski's unpublished studies of the region, and the plan of that abandoned project has helped structure this book.Close Bauer, JanetReview of The Story of a Marriage: The Letters of Bronislaw Malinowski and Elsie Masson, by Helena Wayne Journal Article In: American Ethnologist, vol. 25, no. 4, pp. 769–771, 1998, ISSN: 0094-0496.Links | BibTeX | Tags: book review, story of family, work about Malinowski, work about Masson@article{bauer_review_1998, title = {Review of The Story of a Marriage: The Letters of Bronislaw Malinowski and Elsie Masson, by Helena Wayne}, author = {Janet Bauer}, doi = {10.2307/645882}, issn = {0094-0496}, year = {1998}, date = {1998-01-01}, journal = {American Ethnologist}, volume = {25}, number = {4}, pages = {769--771}, keywords = {book review, story of family, work about Malinowski, work about Masson}, pubstate = {published}, tppubtype = {article} } Closedoi:10.2307/645882Close Alvarez, Oscar FernándezConrad y Malinowski en el corazón de las tinieblas Journal Article In: Estudios Humanísticos: Filología.
